We're just seven students

Leaf It Better is a project we run at NUCB International College in Nisshin, Japan. Our cafeteria's leftover food gets burned as garbage, and that bothered us, so we started turning it into compost instead.

Our story

We started with one bucket in the dorm and honestly had no idea what we were doing. It smelled pretty bad at first, and it took us a while to get the balance right. A year later we're composting scraps from the cafeteria kitchen, going on farm visits, and helping other floors set up their own bins.

We're not going to fix food waste on our own. We just wanted to see if a few students could actually make a dent in it, and then get more people to join in.

What we believe

A few things we've figured out

Start small

One bucket doesn't sound like much, but it adds up, and it's way easier than trying to fix everything at once.

It's fine to mess up

We got a lot wrong early on. We write down what didn't work so nobody has to repeat our mistakes.

It's better together

Composting got us talking to our floor, local farmers, and people in the city we'd never have met otherwise.
